Tupelo Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast

12/6/2009  By Alan Nunnelee

Each year before the Tupelo Christmas Parade, the Kiwanis Club sponsors a pancake breakfast at First United Methodist Church and, for many years, it has been our tradition to attend. The members of the club put in many hours volunteering on this project which, along with other projects they undertake throughout the year, funds needs throughout our community. The first people we saw were my college professor, Dr. Henry Nash and his wife Frances, who were there all day taking up tickets. The club members cook the breakfast and wait on tables. They also compete for tips based on who has the "best" hat, with all of the tips going to the clubs fundraising projects. As we visited, laughed, and enjoyed a good breakfast together, I was reminded that the strentgh of our country can be found in our homes, our neighborhods, our churches, and our communities. Our support for each other does not manafest itself in the halls of government, either in Jackson or in Washington. I am concerned that thouse in charge of our government in Washington, think that the solution to all of our challenges can be found through more government. The spirit of the Tupelo Kiwanis Club Pancake breakfast reminds me that places like this iw where we need to look to see the real strength of our country.
