First Step In Taking Back America

5/21/2010  By Alan Nunnelee

As we approach the final week of the Primary, words cannot describe how humbled and appreciative I am of all your efforts on behalf of this campaign.  We have groups walking neighborhoods in communities throughout the district. Phone lists are complete and phone banks ready to go. This is a district wide efforts and I’m excited to see our efforts coming together. As I have told people all over the district, I may be the one with my name on the ballot but this campaign is not about me, it is about taking America back!

I have enjoyed meeting so many good people throughout the 1st Congressional District. I continue to ask folks to join our efforts because the Republican Primary is just the first step in taking America back and making sure that we fire Nancy Pelosi!  I can’t do it by myself but the road to a conservative Republican majority in Washington runs right through North Mississippi.

My job as I cross the district in my red F 150 is to let people know why I want to be their congressman and what I will do if given the opportunity to serve.  I am proud of my conservative record in the state senate.  I voted to cut taxes over 150 times, introduced legislation putting “In God We Trust” on the wall of every classroom in the state at no cost to the taxpayers, led the fight to prohibit any tax dollars to fund abortions, and have fought tirelessly to protect the unborn.  Mississippi is now the safest place in America for an unborn child because of our efforts.

As chairman of the Appropriations Committee in the state senate for the past three years I have stood shoulder to shoulder with Governor Haley Barbour and Lieutenant-Governor Phil Bryant to hold the line on spending during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.  It has not been easy but people all over Mississippi are tightening their budgets and they have every reason to expect their government to do the same.

I have watched with growing dismay as the Obama-Pelosi regime has unleashed a liberal agenda so radical even Bill Clinton would not have attempted it.  Whether it’s Obamacare, Stimulus, Cap and Trade, or bailouts, the names change but the results are the same: more government, higher taxes, and less freedom.

The question for us in the 1st Congressional District is what role has our congressman played in this situation?  I would suggest that at best he has played the role of an enabler.  One of the most important votes a congressman cast is for the Speaker of the House because the leadership team decides the direction and agenda of that congress.   Our congressman chose to cast his vote for Nancy Pelosi and I do not see how Nancy Pelosi represents the values of the 1st Congressional District. He also voted for the $780 million stimulus package and has come out against the effort to repeal Obamacare and criticized those who support repeal of political posturing.  You and I know that he is wrong and badly out of touch with his constituents on these issues.

I think the people of the 1st Congressional District deserve a congressman who will stand up to the liberals in Washington rather than enable them.  We need somebody in the race this fall that is a proven, battle-tested conservative that will be ready to take on the challenge of defeating the Obama-Pelosi agenda. We need someone who has the ability to hold the Obama administration accountable.

I’m asking you to join us in our effort to take back America. I ask for your vote on June 1st. If you will be out of town on June 1st, please make sure you vote absentee by calling your registrar or by going to your county courthouse to vote. It is a simple process that will only take a minute of your time. Thank you for your efforts and thank you in advance for your vote.
