Desoto's Greatest Generation
6/27/2010 By Alan Nunnelee
Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the Desoto County event recognizing World War II Veterans. This event was planned as a way to remember the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II.
Every moment I spend with these great men and women, I am in awe. Many of these heroes were age 17 or 18 when they volunteered. Some did not come home for 4 or 5 years. Many of their friends did not come home at all.
For those of us born after 1945, it is difficult to imagine the world situation when they answered freedom's call. It is also frightening to imagine what if...they chose their personal comforts over their call to service. What would the world look like today.
As I walked away from this event, I asked myself, "Will our generation answer the call to defend freedom?"
